Meet the Chilean team who discovered a possible survivor of an explosion in Beirut

Since Thursday, all eyes and ears have been seized in Lebanon on Mar Mikhael, as a group of Chilean volunteers and their famous dog lead a seemingly impossible operation to rescue a potential survivor from the rubble.

But, who were TOPOS Chile and how did they lead the process that caught the attention of an entire nation and beyond?

TOPOS Chile, in Spanish for “Chile Moles”, is a well-known humanitarian search and rescue group of 18 rescuers that was founded in 1985 after the famous Mexico City earthquake.

Over the years, it has been considered among the best rescue groups in the world.

The Chilean NGO, made up of more than a dozen volunteers and a rescue dog named Flash, is made up of a team that is highly respected in their home country, Chile and the world for their wonderful work in various disaster sites.

Previous rescue operations

TOPOS Chile has assisted rescue efforts in the Fukushima earthquake (Japan, 2011), as well as areas affected by natural disasters in Brazil, Chile, Iran, Egypt, Mexico and other countries since the 1980s.

In Mexico City, which was struck by an earthquake in 1985, volunteers rescued 70 people from the rubble.

But perhaps the team’s most famous achievement is recovering a survivor from the rubble of a destroyed building in Haiti, 27 days after it was trapped by an earthquake.

It was this achievement that partly inspired hope in the ongoing process in Beirut, which the team started after discovering potential signs of life through their sophisticated hearing and thermal devices, life positioning devices and, of course, Flash’s powerful and trained sense of smell. .

How did they get to Beirut?

Since the August 4 Beirut bombing, the Lebanese ambassador to Chile, Joman Khadaj Zahlan, has been working with the Lebanese community there to raise money and send aid to Lebanon.

Our ambassador, with the help of the Lebanese community, did the fundraising [to] Akram Nehme, founder of the Lebanese NGO Ashrafieh 2020, told CBC that such a trip is possible to Beirut.

The aforementioned NGO also helped the Chilean team come to Beirut.

However, their arrival in the Lebanese capital was not as easy as it should have been. Reportedly, members of TOPOS Chile did not have a place to stay until another local NGO, Live Love Beirut, helped secure their housing.

Today, the team works relentlessly on a ruined street in Mar Mikhael / Gemmayzeh, hoping to discover a much-needed miracle from under the dust and debris.

While they cannot be sure whether their hopes will be fulfilled or not, they must not hold back because, in their words, their famous slogan is, “No one is dead until we find them.”
