Santa Clara County is organizing its first professional sporting event since March

SAN JOSE – Gary Kwan and wife Emily drove to Earthquakes on Saturday, as they usually do in COEX matches on their home turf.

But this time they never got out of the car, even after their arrival.

The blue Prius was one of about 50 vehicles stationed right outside the stadium while Earthquakes played the first professional sporting event in Santa Clara County since March. With the crowd ban still in place, the Quakes team developed a car-viewing party that allowed season ticket holders to watch the match on the stadium’s giant video board.

Quan and the others paid $ 50 to be part of the unique cheer division, and expressed themselves by firing their horns and lighting their headlights at various points in the game.

Their efforts did not go unnoticed by the players.

“It’s different, but it was great to hear the trumpets, especially before the match, to be able to provide any kind of atmosphere,” said COEX captain Chris Wondolowski.

Wendolovsky scored the COEX goal in their 1-1 draw with Colorado Rapids, and scored from the penalty spot in the 59th minute. It was his third goal of the season and scored the league’s No. 162 in his career. Rapids, however, equalized in the 81st minute when Ki Camara headed from a corner kick. It was his 129th goal, which ranked fifth on the MLS list of all time.

Earthquakes (2-2-3) were originally scheduled to resume on home turf on August 26, but this competition was one of five NFL matches that were postponed that night when players came out to protest racial injustice.

“It’s clearly a strange feeling when you are playing on an empty stadium,” said defender Florian Gongwirth. “Nevertheless, it was nice to go home tonight. I think last Wednesday we were ready to go, but today was a special feeling for everyone. It’s a really weird and difficult time, so you’re really happy with the little things in life. This was definitely something that gave me a lot of Joy. “

The joy extended beyond the field, beyond the players. A fan, Santa Clara resident Robert Mitchell, described the game as a “dream field case” because it mainly drove into the middle of a field to watch professional athletes.

Mitchell said, “I am amazed at how much I enjoyed the strange movie experience in the car.” “It was weird to see empty stalls but still feel a sense of community with everyone in their cars, even if we were separated by plastic, rubber and a few feet of grass – or Astroturf, I think.”

Mitchell and his wife Nicole brought layers of clothing, extra bottles of water and face masks. But next time he said it would also offer hearing protection.

“It’s like everyone is driving a gas-powered vuvuzela,” Mitchell said. “This makes me wonder if everyone on Coleman Street (next to the stadium) is veering to avoid non-existent traffic.”

Next time it should be louder. The Quakes will play at 8 pm on September 13th against their rival Los Angeles Galaxy.
