New research to help companies increase seismic safety
Monday, September 7, 2020 11:36 PM Reporters: Earthquake Commission
New research aims to reduce casualties in future earthquakes by gathering and sharing what New Zealand companies have done to protect their employees and customers.
More than 3,500 people have been injured in the Canterbury earthquakes due to construction, brickwork or other projectiles, and researcher Dr. Tracy Hutton says the tenth anniversary of the first earthquake in Darfield is a good opportunity to remind companies to consider earthquake risks unrelated to their buildings. To the strength of the building itself.
Hutton and co-researchers Sophie Horvall (of Resilient Organizations) and Tony Collins (University of Canterbury) were funded by the Earthquakes Commission (EQC) to evaluate safety measures developed by the various organizations to reduce risk and see if seismic safety is a suitable corporate priority.
“We are currently conducting one-on-one interviews with a variety of organizations of all sizes, and we’re impressed with the level of organizations’ engagement on earthquake risk, ”says Hatton.
“We want to know what they are doing, what motivates them and what they need more than that.”
Hatton says there is no clear picture yet of whether seismic safety is a priority for the Kiwi companies, but he says the research results will help those who feel they need to do more, by learning from others’ experiences.
The head of resilience and research at EQC, Dr Joe Horrocks, says that just as many New Zealanders spend a lot of their time at work, reducing risks in the workplace is vital.
“We know that most companies make sure they are in the right places from a structural engineering point of view, but we don’t know how people manage non-structural risks like roof tiles, light fixtures, falling cabinets, and heavy things like air conditioning units,” she says.
“This research will give us a much better picture of where the business has successfully reduced these other risks to its employees and customers.”
Initial interviews identified what companies care about, and a broader nationwide survey will now collect more data that will help companies keep people safe in their workplace.
Hatton says it is essential to get as many companies as possible.
“Even if you haven’t taken any steps and feel you have little to contribute to, the survey will provide you with an opportunity to identify areas where the business community might need more support to better prepare for an earthquake. It will also help build a picture of New Zealand’s well preparedness across the board. Domains. “
The research will result in a best practices handbook that will be shared with all participants.
Hutton says the report will show what earthquake risk reduction in New Zealand looks like and the methods and resources used by organizations.
“The research will also tell us what helps or hinders organizations taking steps to reduce risks and where improvements can be made.”
Hatton says Cantabrian people have learned the painfully way about the dangers of dangers such as falling furniture and roofing service equipment, so the 10th anniversary is the perfect time to capture those lessons and remind the rest of the country to prepare.
