a three-year study in Indonesia shows promising results
A three-year study in Indonesia yielded encouraging results showing a significant reduction in the number of dengue cases. It involved release Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in and around the endemic city of Yogyakarte denge.
The study found that in the city and surrounding areas where infected mosquitoes were released, the number of dengue cases decreased significantly compared to parts of the city where they did not.
Trial – conducted by the World Mosquito Program in close collaboration with the Tahi Foundation and Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia – tested Ae. aegypti mosquitoes that carry Wolbachia because of their ability to inhibit dengue virus transmission.
The results will be submitted for evaluation during the next WHO meeting Vector Control Advisory Group in December for experts to formally assess the impact of the strategy based on test results and related studies.
How there are several effective sustainable tools available to fight Aedesdiseases that are transmitted, all new tools that show public health value against dengue and similar viruses will be a welcome addition to the vector control arsenal.

Wolbachia are intercellular natural symbiotic bacteria in insects that are known to reduce ability Ae. aegypti for the transmission of dengue virus and related viruses under laboratory conditions. However, epidemiological evidence is awaited that will show a wide distribution Wolbachia-infected Ae. aegypti in reducing the overall frequency of dengue virus transmission within the population; the results of the study from Indonesia are therefore of great interest.
