Coronavirus: Spain sees 514 dead in a day – BBC News
Another dark day for Spain is the 39,763 coronavirus cases confirmed nationwide. Another 6,582 infections have been announced in the last 24 hours, with 2,696 deaths.
Madrid remains the epicenter of the Spanish pandemic, with 1,535 dead. The northeastern region of Catalonia has also become a major concern in 1,939 cases, higher than Madrid.
Fernando Simón, head of emergency health care, said that almost 3,800 people have recovered from the virus but that they continue to undergo 2,636 intensive care.
“It’s a tough week and we all look forward to whether or not we get to the top and get off, these very aggressive measures that have been put in place in Spain.”
The worrying rate of infection in health care professionals has also been the focus. Of the 39,763 people infected across the country, 5,400 are health care workers, accounting for nearly 14% of those with the disease.
The government has asked parliamentarians to extend the alert status until April 11.
