Counterfeit Antimalarials in West and Central Africa with an WHO outdated essential drug program logo

These medical product alerts refer to a series of confirmed counterfeit antimalarials circulating in West and Central Africa. The medicines subject to this alert display a similar outdated logo

Since 2013, different stakeholders have been reporting to the different WHO surveillance and surveillance systems on various counterfeit medicines, displaying the outdated WHO logo for essential medicines. Constant and widespread availability
these counterfeit medicines emphasize the strong need for extra vigilance. The WHO has previously issued two warnings on this issue (No.132 in October 2014, i No.131 in March 2014)

This warning for WHO medical devices no. 1/2020 refers to counterfeit quinine sulfate 300 mg presented in six different combinations of batch number, shelf life and production date (see Table 1). False use of obsolete WHO
The essential drug program logo can create a false sense of product quality.

Recently received results of analyzed samples are presented do not contain any of the expected active ingredients.

Quinine sulfate is listed on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for the Management and Treatment of Severe Malaria. At this stage, no adverse reactions attributed to these counterfeit products have been reported to WHO.

All the above counterfeit products claim to be manufactured by REMEDICA LTD – Cyprus and contain 300 mg quinine sulfate. Remedica doo confirmed that:

  • did not produce the above counterfeit products; and
  • Remedica has never used variable data (batch number and dates) on the above products.

These fake drugs show the following common characteristics (see photos):

  • gray or white plastic containers containing 1000 loose circular tablets;
  • display the outdated logo of the WHO Essential Medicines Program;
  • English and French labeling with errors and inconsistencies; and
  • detected at the patient level in both regulated and unregulated outlets.

WHO requires greater vigilance in the supply chains of countries likely to be affected by these counterfeit products. Increased alertness should include hospitals, clinics, health centers, wholesalers, distributors, pharmacies and any other suppliers
medical products.

If you own the above products, do not use them, If you have used these counterfeit products or if you have experienced adverse events using these products, please seek advice immediately
from a qualified healthcare professional and ensure that they report the incident to your local Department of Health / National Medicines Regulators / National Pharmacovigilance Center.
