Secret Russia has just released footage of the largest bomb ever detonated – a hydrogen bomb referred to as the “Tsar bomb.” For many people, the situation that covered the world after WWII, which pitted the Soviet Union against the West and cast a shadow over almost all military matters, is a distant memory, or something learned in the texts of history. But it was very real in the 1950s and 1960s, and lasted well into the 1980s. But during these two short decades in particular, America and the Soviet Union competed for everything, and their rivalry became food for many for political excitement.
Although the Americans had hoped that the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan at the end of the war would lead to the end of the arms race and not the start of the arms race, in reality it only increased Soviet competitiveness, and whatever states made it militarily, the Soviet Union She was determined to make it bigger. Kaiser Pumbaa is the perfect example.
In late October 1961, the Soviet Army detonated a massive hydrogen bomb, the RDS-220, dubbed the Tsar Bomb. It was a project initiated by then commander Nikita Khrushchev, and when it was detonated, he created an explosion equivalent to an earthquake of magnitude five on the Richter scale – worst explosion ever, worse than Nagasaki and Hiroshima, actually 700 times stronger! The mushroom cloud reached seven times higher in the sky from the summit of Mount Everest, and its strength was equal to 50 million tons of “typical” explosives.

Everything in the aftermath of Tsar Pumbaa was immediately destroyed. For 35 kilometers in each direction, it was as if the ground had been cleared. Nearby military town, Severny, 55 kilometers away, so I thought it was safe and out of harm’s way, it was effectively destroyed, and most of the buildings were knocked down.
At one point, the footage captured of the explosion wasn’t available for the public to view. However, this video is now available on You Tube for all to see; Anyone interested in how devastating the Tsar Bomba is can see it explode in real time. The video is 30 minutes long and can be found below.
In 1952, the United States dropped the Ivy King nuclear bomb 610 m (2,000 ft) north of Runit Island.
In hindsight, it may seem strange for any country to pour its resources into destructive bombs like the Tsar bomb, but in the early 1960s, suspicion and jealousy pervaded all military and intelligence affairs between Russia and the West. As historian Robert Norris recently told the New York Times, “There was a huge race (going on) … Who was going to get a bigger bomb? And the Soviets won.” Even the pilots who brought the bomb to the site near the Matuchkin Strait felt the explosion, although they were far away at the time of its detonation. Their aircraft instantly lost an altitude of 1,000 feet; However, they managed to land safely.
The full video below is interesting and it explains the bomb and the test but if you just want to see the landing and the moment of impact start around 21:00.
The development of the bomb was not a closely guarded secret, but at the time Americans expressed doubts that making a bomb larger than the one dropped on Japan had any intrinsic value. However, the Soviets continued to develop the technology to make it bigger, testing it despite international suspicion and even ridicule from some quarters.

The footage is a relic of a time when children practiced hiding under their desks in the event of an attack and nuclear bunkers were a common addition to any home. Thank God, so hopefully, those days are over.
