Australian journalists leave China ‘in the face of diplomacy’ – BBC News

The last two journalists working in the Chinese media in China have gone home after a five-day diplomatic stay. Bill Birtles of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation of Sydney and Mike Smith of the Australian Financial Review team landed on Tuesday. Chinese authorities questioned the two men before they left. The ABC reported that Birtles “was not asked about the allegations or conduct made in China.” Relations between Australia and China have deteriorated in recent years. In Ireland, Chinese intervention in Australian society was denounced, but the link deteriorated after Canberra backed the origins of the coronavirus pandemic in international research. The Chinese Foreign Correspondents Club said on Monday that 17 foreign journalists had been expelled from the country in the first half of 2020. Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said consulate officials had helped the couple return home. #BBCOS #BBCOutsideSource Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog .
