Daily tremors in Dahanu, Maharashtra state amid residents’ fears – Mumbai News

Dahanu in Balgar district, Maharashtra state is still experiencing mild tremors that induce a sense of fear among residents. An average earthquake of 3.2 on the Richter scale was recorded Wednesday morning at 4:17 am in continuation of the current wave of daily tremors that began on September 4.

On September 8, two tremors struck, the first measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale at around 09:50, and another at a magnitude of 2.5 struck Dahanu at 10:15. On September 7, a slight earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale was recorded.

On September 5, four aftershocks measuring 2.8, 4.0, 3.6 and 2.7 on the Richter scale were recorded in some villages of Dahanu. Although no casualties were reported due to these accidents, some homes were cracked by the earthquake.

During the intervening night of 4 and 5 September, residents of Aena, Abcheri, Talasari, Dongribada, Ambouli, Danivari, Osarvera, Casa, Purdy, Dundelwady, Chesen and other villages ran out of their homes in panic when the earthquake struck and had to spend the night in the open. Talasari Police have issued public announcements in the aforementioned villages urging people not to panic.

Since November 2018, villages around Dhundalwadi and other areas in Dahanu have seen mild tremors at regular intervals, raising concerns in the minds of local residents.

Newly appointed Balgar, Manik Gulsil, along with other senior officials from the region, visited the earthquake sites in Dahanu and Talasari, where cracks appeared in some of the houses.

Two deaths due to earthquakes

The tremors have resulted in the death of two people since February 2019, when two-year-old Vibhavi Boyal from Halladawadi, Talasari, died after part of the roof of a house collapsed on it due to an earthquake. A few months later in July 2019, 55-year-old Ricia Migwali, a resident of Vasavalpada, Dahanu, died in similar circumstances. Mugwali’s wife was also slightly injured.
