The AVO lowers the alert level at Macuchen volcano after the summer of seismic disturbances

Scientists have lowered the alert level at Macuchen volcano after an ongoing pause in unrest.

John Bauer, a geophysicist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, said that seismic activity has been steadily declining for months, following a sequence of earthquakes near the volcano that began in mid-June.

“We had a series of multiple earthquakes on June 15. There were two of them in particular above 4 degrees, and they were strongly felt in the Unalaska / Dutch Harbor community,” Bauer said. This triggered a series of small earthquakes that lasted for several months.

Earthquakes were collected six miles east of the volcano’s summit at a depth of about five miles below the surface of the Earth. The AVO has located 1,245 earthquakes near Makushin since then.

But on Tuesday, due to the return of seismic activity in Macuchen to background levels, Bauer said that the AVO reduced the alert level from “advisory” to “normal”, and the flight color code from “yellow” to “green.”

According to Power, when dealing with a volcano like Makushin that is moderately active, it expects that there will be some kind of volcanic activity at some point in the future. But at the moment, he said, scientists aren’t seeing anything that causes them any kind of anxiety.

“These earthquakes slowly subsided over time. There was no increase in evaporation. Our GPS devices and what we can see with satellite data do not indicate any other kind of disturbance,” he said. “At this point in time, we don’t see anything to worry about here in the short term. So somehow you can say, at the moment, we have a clean health bill.”

Bauer said that at some point in the coming years or decades there is likely to be renewed volcanic activity in Macuchen, and the AVO will continue to closely monitor the volcano.

Makushin is located on the northern island of Unalaska, about 16 miles west of the Unalaska community. According to the AVO, the vast, ice-covered volcanic layer is a site of frequent steam and minor ash eruptions. But there have been no major explosions in this century.

Makushin is currently monitored by a network of seismic stations, web cameras, Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite imagery, and regional lightning and infrared detection data.
