Palestinian Foreign Minister urges Arab countries to reject the Israeli-Emirati deal

Cairo (AFP) – The Palestinian Foreign Minister called on Wednesday for the Arab countries to reject an agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel to normalize relations, describing the agreement due to be completed next week as an “earthquake.”

The United Arab Emirates and Israel announced an agreement to establish full diplomatic relations on August 13. This deal reflected a change in the Middle East, where shared concerns about archenemy Iran largely exceeded traditional Arab support for the Palestinians.

Most of the Arab world has always rejected diplomatic relations with Israel in the absence of a peace agreement requiring the establishment of a Palestinian state on the lands that Israel occupied in 1967. However, this steadfast support for the Palestinians has begun to weaken in recent years, in part due to the shared hostility with Israel towards Iran and Iran’s proxies in the region.

The Palestinians have repeatedly expressed their rejection of the US-brokered deal between Israel and the UAE as a quid pro quo for one of the few cards they have in their dying peace talks with Israel to establish their independent state – the Arab boycott of Israel.

In a meeting of the League of Arab States, on Wednesday, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Malki said that the Palestinian Authority called for an emergency meeting after the UAE-Israeli deal was announced.

He said that a member of the Arab League opposed a Palestinian request to add an item to the meeting’s agenda, a clear reference to a draft resolution presented by Palestinians regarding the deal. Maliki did not mention the state.

The meeting took place online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Al-Maliki described the deal between the UAE and Israel as an “earthquake” that struck the Arab consensus on the Palestinian issue, and urged Arab foreign ministers to reject the deal, otherwise our meeting would be a blessing, collusion with it, or a cover for it.

Hossam Zaki, Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab League, said at a press conference in Cairo that the foreign ministers had failed to reach a compromise on a decision on the Emirati-Israeli deal due to disagreements between the Palestinians and the Emiratis over the drafting of the Palestinian agreement. Project.

“A draft resolution needs more time and intense consultations … We hope in the future it will reach an agreed formula,” he said.

The UAE has offered the agreement, which is scheduled to be signed on September 15, as canceling Israel’s planned annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted that the halt was “temporary.”

Al-Maliki, the Palestinian foreign minister, rejected this argument, saying that the Palestinians’ resistance and their rejection of Israeli annexation policies is the reason Israel has suspended its plans.

He accused the United States of pressuring other Arab countries to normalize relations with Israel, which he described as “colonial and racist occupation.” He was apparently referring to Sudan, which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited last month to push his transitional authorities to establish diplomatic relations with Israel.
