Surviving disasters has given the founder a new life lease. He benefits from it the most through giving
Surviving the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010 set the record straight for Diovine “DJ” Jean Louis. Lewis was a live music event planner at the time, and he’s back in his native Haiti from Miami to plan a wholesome concert. He checked into the Montana Hotel in Port-au-Prince, handed over his bags and ventured out for some lunch. When the earthquake struck, the hotel collapsed, killing more than 50 people.
“I see my life as a blessing,” Lewis says. “I’m here today because I was given a second chance.”
Today, Lewis is the founder and CEO of Toast Distillers, which he launched in 2015. Toast’s core products are premium and premium beverages, but that’s just one aspect of the business. The charitable arm of Miami-based Toast First Response is donating supplies to the front lines in the aftermath of natural disasters. When the Covid-19 pandemic reached the US in March, Toast quickly turned to start production of hand sanitizers, and shipped the first pallets by March 25.
After receiving a flurry of domestic attention, the company has put the disinfection process on high alert. It was sold to retailers and to Florida and South Carolina and donated to the Army, Navy, University of Miami, and Boys and Girls Clubs in Miami-Dade County. In total, the company produced and shipped more than 500,000 gallons of disinfectant, of which approximately 50,000 gallons were donated.
Lewis’ career as an entrepreneur can be traced back to his love of music, specifically the guitar. After immigrating to Florida from Haiti at the age of 10, his musical talent lured him into the Miami nightlife scene, which led to him staging a modest-sized concert aimed at benefiting Caribbean communities. Within a few years, it had grown into the Starfest Music Festival, a mega multi-day event highlighting hip-hop, jazz and reggae. Lewis was able to make events free by attracting sponsors and using the surplus proceeds to rehabilitate hospitals, orphanages, and other facilities across the Caribbean.
In the weeks leading up to the earthquake, Starfest drew more than 500,000 attendees across multiple locations, capping Rick Ross’s work in Haiti.
After the disaster that killed more than 200,000 people, Lewis stayed in Haiti for several weeks to assist in the recovery effort. He says the experience made him think carefully about his next steps. Having worked in some of the most exclusive clubs in Miami, he always dreamed of launching a luxury liquor brand. One day, he asked his attorney to find out if the Toast name was a trademark. To their surprise, this was not the case. “I always say,” Every day on the ground is a good day for toasting, “Lewis says. “So I knew I had to do it.”
Just four years after Lewis leveraged his connections to get the company’s products to bars and restaurants in South Beach and beyond, Toast acquired the Miami Distilling Company, which makes Pitbull’s Voli 305 vodka. When Covid struck earlier this year and hand sanitizer began disappearing from shelves across the country, Lewis knew that the alcohol manufacturer with its own facilities was putting his company in a position to help. He moved Toast operations with the help of a local company, the US cosmetics company, and entered into a partnership with a nearby bottling plant. The company quickly started manufacturing gels, sprays, and disinfectant lotions under the name EZ Hand Sanitizer, which it still manufactures today.
Getting started to help communities in crisis is nothing new on Toast. After Hurricane Irma struck Florida in 2017, and Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas last year, the company moved trucks loaded with food, water, nappies and other essential supplies to affected areas.
“Everyone in our organization understands the roots of this company,” Lewis says. “So when we ask everyone, they jump on the plane to help the social good. It’s part of our DNA. If we can donate and give, we don’t think twice about it, we do our best. When we need the front lines, that’s what we do.” We show. “
