A man discovers a crack on the southern sea floor

The full effects of the 7.7 earthquake in January may still be seen, after a man discovered a large crack on the sea floor in South Sound Lake.

David Walker, who has been visiting the lake regularly for years, said he had never seen this rift before.

David Walker said, “I was out on the paddleboard with my wife about two weeks ago, and it was a beautiful, quiet day when we saw it.” “At first I wasn’t sure what it was.”

Walker said he dived into the water and swam down to investigate the crack.

“I would say it was 30 to 40 feet long and about 6 feet deep in some parts,” Walker told the Cayman Compass.

An underwater splice video filmed by Walker shows that it has become the habitat of several species of fish and crustaceans.

Walker, 52, a lifelong South Sound resident, said he’s snorkeling and explored the lake’s waters for many years, making sure the crack didn’t exist before.

“I was taking my wife to another hole not far, where fresh water comes from underground,” Walker said. “Think [the newly discovered rift] It may have opened up during the earthquake earlier this year. “

Tim Austin, deputy director of the Environment Department, said the rift was not a cause for concern. “These kinds of features are not particularly unusual in certain areas around the Cayman Islands and the South Sound is one of the most prolific areas for pit basins.” He tells the Cayman Compass, noting that he has been aware of several of them over the past few years.

“Our geology basically contains a lot of fissures and caves that have been covered up over the years,” he said. “Occasionally (more common around earthquakes) these caves, faults, and other hollow features collapse, causing the Earth above to sink into the resulting space.”

Austin explained that the fault resembles a “typical fissure” that can be found in an Iron Shore that “was covered and then exposed”.

He added that he did not believe that this was “any real cause for concern, but it is clear that if someone happened under a building or on the road, as happened last month in this area, it may have some negative consequences.”
