Roma Museum opens a new art museum in L’Aquila

The MAXXI L’Aquila, a new museum of contemporary art under the management of the Museum of Rome, is scheduled to open in the earthquake-ravaged city of L’Aquila on October 30. For the first time in 2015, the Italian government announced that the museum aims to mark a “rebirth” of L’Aquila, which was devastated by the 2009 earthquake and claimed 309 lives. The project, which has been stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic, is now ready to open.

The L’Aquila Gallery is housed in an 18th-century Baroque building that was once the seat of the Ministry of Culture. The building, which was badly damaged in the earthquake, has been completely restored by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism. The project began in 2016 when the Italian government announced funding of 30 million euros to complete the restoration of the medieval walls of L’Aquila, the Cathedral and Basilica of Santa Maria Paganica, helping the city return to a cultural center.

Works by famous artists including Elisabetta Benassi, Daniela de Lorenzo, Alberto Garotti and Nunzio, along with photos of Italian photojournalist Paolo Pellegrine, Paris-based photographer and video artist Stefano Serio, will be on display at the museum. The new MaXXI site in L’Aquila will also feature a small collection taken from the main museum in Rome, featuring works by famous artists.
