A second earthquake within a week struck the town of Bedfordshire.

Leighton Buzzard felt a 2.1-magnitude earthquake at 11.20 p.m. on Sunday, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS).

It is believed to have followed the 3.5-magnitude earthquake felt on September 8th.

A BGS spokesperson said: “The latest event was over 100 times smaller than the September 8 event in the same region.

“The occurrence of smaller events than other previous earthquakes in the UK is unknown.

“The small event that occurred in Bedfordshire last night could have occurred because all the pressure in the rocks was not relieved by the event that occurred on September 8 in the same area or caused a slight change in the stress regime at that location.

“There is ongoing research in the academic world about the issue of aftershocks.”

During the previous earthquake, residents described strong shaking that shook walls, although police said there were no reports of injuries.

Usha Chapman, from Luton, said the earthquake “lasted for five seconds,” adding, “I was on a video call with my mom when I felt a sideways push.

This caused the BGS to receive reports that the earthquake was a “big blast,” while others said they felt their homes shake.

After Sunday’s earthquake, the BGS tweeted: “One report describes that it felt slower and less severe than the previous earthquake.”
