Govt: 413 earthquakes were recorded from 1 March to 8 September in India

The Ministry of Earth Sciences said Tuesday that the National Seismic Network recorded 413 earthquakes in the country between March 1 and September 8. In response to a question in Rajya Sabha, the ministry said that the NSN network is maintained by the National Center of Seismology (NCS) to detect and identify earthquakes in and around the country.

She added, “A total of 413 earthquakes were recorded by NSN during the period from March 1, 2020 to September 8, 2020.” According to the ministry, 135 of the 413 earthquakes had a magnitude of 3.0 or less and “are not usually felt by people.”

Nearly 153 earthquakes were between 3.0 and 3.9 magnitude. The ministry said it was “slight” and “felt by many people” but “no harm”. A total of 114 earthquakes ranged between 4.0 and 4.9 magnitude. She said that an earthquake of this category “is felt in a large area” and that there is “a slight breakdown of things.”

It was only 11 earthquakes in the 5.0 to 5.7 magnitude range. She added that this category is known as “moderate” and there is “some damage to weak facilities.”
