Official side event of the UN General Assembly on progress and multisectoral actions to end TB
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Russian Federation are organizing an official virtual accompanying event to the UN General Assembly: PROGRESS AND MULTISECTORAL ACTION TOWARDS ACHIEVING GLOBAL GOALS BY THE END OF TB on September 23 from 10: 00H – 12: 00H EDT (16: 00H-18: 00H CEST).
The event will bring together Heads of State, Ministers of Health and other ministries, Heads of Agencies, Partners and civil society to discuss how we can jointly implement the recommendations outlined in the UN Secretary-General’s 2020 Progress Report on Achieving Global TB Goals. and enhancing multisectoral action to stop TB. The focus will also be on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on progress towards stopping TB.
Background:
Despite progress over the past decades, TB remains the world’s leading infectious killer, taking nearly 4,000 lives a day. To speed up action to stop TB, the heads of state gathered at the first UN high-level meeting in September 2018. The meeting resulted in an action-oriented political declaration containing bold targets for closing care gaps and a request to the UN Secretary-General for a 2020 report on progress in achieving the targets and implementing the UN Political Declaration on TB.
The UN Secretary-General’s Progress Report for 2020 was prepared with the support of the Director-General of the WHO and will be published at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. It includes data from partners and civil society and covers progress towards global TB goals; progress in translating commitments into action; the impact and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on the TB response and the ten priority recommendations. The report will provide a comprehensive overview at the 2023 TB summit. Overall, the report shows that high-level commitments and goals have spurred global and national progress in stopping TB, but that urgent and more ambitious investments and actions are needed to focus the world on achieving goals, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. WHO modeling and analysis highlights that progress made in the fight against TB is under threat – disruptions to TOV from COVID-19 services will lead to an increase in 400,000 TB deaths in 2020 alone.
