September is the month of national readiness Sweetened

National Preparedness Month is celebrated each year in September and is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within the Department of Homeland Security. National Preparedness Month encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities. The theme for this year is “Disasters Don’t Wait. Create Your Plan Today.”

The 2019 Atlantic hurricane season was the fourth in a successive series of super-medium and destructive hurricane seasons, featuring more than 15 specific storms and eight hurricanes that caused more than $ 50 billion in damage and at least 172 deaths. On July 4, 2019, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake occurred near the Naval Air Weapons Station in China Lake, California. The next day, there was a magnitude 7.1 earthquake. Disasters happen and these accidents are a reminder of how important it is to be prepared at work and at home. Having a good plan saves lives, time and money.

Ready Navy is a Navy-wide emergency preparedness program that is a public outreach program to help sailors and families when similar disasters strike. Ready Navy is designed for the Navy community to increase the capacity of every person and family in or near offshore facilities to meet the challenges of today and prepare for all kinds of hazards, from hurricanes and earthquakes to terrorist attacks.

Navy personnel and their families are strongly encouraged to enhance home and work emergency planning by reading and following the advice and information found at www.ready.navy.mil and www.ready.gov.

Here are some of the many tips to consider as you decide to get ready:

• Create an emergency plan and discuss it with your family.

• Determine where to go in an emergency, such as a friend’s house in another area, a local hotel, or a public shelter.

• While preparing for hazards, remember to keep in mind the safety and health measures of COVID-19. Knowing the number of confirmed cases in the area around you may affect where you or your family might head if an evacuation is carried out.

As a result of COVID-19, FEMA recommends that emergency kits also include disposable gloves, hand sanitizer, and face masks.

• Take a current photo of you and your pet together in case you are separated during a disaster.
