The Portland Timbers traveled to Earthquake to face San Jose Earthquakes on September 16, a make-up match that resulted in a 1-1 draw. Just three days later, the two teams will play again in San Jose.

Giovanni Saverz and Mathias Almeida have each rotated heavily on their teams. But there were two special players sure to start over on Saturday: Portland’s Eric Williamson and San Jose’s Judson.

Williamson was one of the Superstars of MLS is Back. He successfully played as a square midfielder alongside Diego Chara. The Timbers were solid defensively throughout the tournament and only allowed more than one goal in a single match against LAFC.

Portland was also very effective in attack, consistently outperforming his predicted targets. The Timbers will sit on a low block, regain the ball and retract. Williamson and Chara’s dual axis was crucial to this strategy. Both are good with the ball at their feet, able to get out of difficult situations and looking forward to playing the ball to one of two ports: Diego Valerie or Sebastian Blanco.

Timbers have struggled offensively and in defense of late. This is partly due to the ending of Blanco’s injury season against Seattle Sounders and other factors such as the inability to train outdoors due to Portland’s air quality. But the games continue to advance very quickly, and Savarese, despite needing to win matches, also needs to rest the players.

On Wednesday, Savarese chose Valerie’s comfort. Williamson was moved from his natural position in midfield and moved to Valerie’s 10th most liberal position. This meant that when Timbers won the ball they looked to Williamson as their outlet to get out of the pressure.

Early in the match, Savares’ experience with Williamson’s position as No. 10 seemed effective. Portland sat deep, won the ball and immediately looked at Williamson, who was receiving the ball with options. He can play the ball for attackers who make dangerous rounds, dribble in space or play a safe pass to maintain possession.

San Jose found out and seemed to have a plan to deal with this tactical wrinkle, even when dealing with Williamson instead of Valerie. Goodson was responsible for monitoring the attacking midfielder. He was able to implement the strategy he would have used against Valerie and execute it against Williamson out of office.

The Quakes’ high press repeatedly pressed the Timbers in the final third and Judson began limiting service to Williamson. When this happened, the Timbers had to find a new way to propel the ball forward. They looked for Jaroslaw Nesgoda and one of the wings – Felipe Mora or Yemi Chara – but this hampered Timber’s defensive organization.

Portland pressed 4-4-2 in the first half. Niezgoda and Williamson or Yimmi Chara will be up front, depending on which side of the field San Jose gets the ball. Then there would be a midfield of four, consisting of either Williamson or Yemi Chara who did not press (Mora, Diego Chara and Andy Polo).

When Goodson begins observing Williamson outside the match, one or two of the Wide Players will try to be the director. But the pressure of earthquakes suffocated the Timbers and with fewer midfielders and wide players looking to become outlets, Portland is extremely tight and easy to defend. The only consistent way the Timbers could propel the ball forward was by losing Williamson Goodson from time to time, getting fouled and playing a quick reboot.

Williamson spent most of the first half sitting above the midfield with his back to goal as he drove around trying to find space to exploit in this creative role in the playmaking industry. But the Timbers could have been more accommodating with Mora or Marvin Loria in the role. They are naturally attacking and understand that space better than Williamson. The attackers also got used to seeing less of the ball than Williamson.

Williamson has been one of the keys to the Timbers attack this year, but he is the best when he plays the ball regularly. He has a better understanding of the game through the role of a deeper midfield. Williamson’s sight, pass, and ability to hold the ball allow him to dictate the match and move Timbers’ attack forward. His deeper position in midfield also allows him to take those kicks from midfield that resulted in goalscoring against the Sounders and LAFC.

The American midfielder is a high-tech, high-quality player. He can learn to play the role of a creative midfielder. He is more influential and comfortable when he sits in midfield next to Diego Chara. But we have seen how San Jose plans to tackle the creative midfielders. Goodson would constantly look to jump the pass lanes, put him under pressure upon receiving the ball and attack him constantly.

I imagine Diego Valerie will be returning to the creative midfield role Saturday night. He has the power to defeat the godson and exploit the man’s defense system. Perhaps most importantly, Williamson took a first-hand look at how Goodson would try to get Valerie out of the game. The T2 producer must use his expertise against Judson to play passes and run actions that allow himself space and time. He must also play passes based on the Godson’s poses helping Valerie get to the side of his leg and into space in a transition period.

Savarese’s experience with Williamson in the creative midfield role may not bear fruit on Wednesday, but it could really allow him to dictate the match from midfield and exploit the Meda system for human oversight on Saturday.
