Southern California earthquake: Earthquakes of magnitude 4.5

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that it struck at 11:39 p.m. local time two miles west of El Monte and 10 miles from Los Angeles.

The quake shook buildings and shook windows, and residents were feeling it in the San Diego, Valencia and San Fernando Valley areas. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and the Los Angeles Fire Department warned residents not to be prepared for aftershocks.

LAFD tweeted: “If it’s inside, when the shaking starts, drop the cover, go on. Protect your head and neck while hiding under sturdy furniture or near a strong interior wall, away from windows and doorways until the shaking stops.”

The earthquake was also felt at Los Angeles International Airport, as crews are checking the airport and terminals for any signs of damage, the airport said.

Lucy Jones, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology, said the earthquake caused a “very good jolt” in Pasadena, where it was present. She said in a tweet on Twitter that it was “roughly the same location as the M5.9 Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987”. That earthquake struck on October 1 of that year, causing $ 360 million in damage.
