Oregon experts discuss local tsunami evacuation | social communication

Two of the state’s scholars will present an online discussion of the evacuation challenges that residents of the Nehalm Bay area would face in the event of a major earthquake and tsunami. The event, hosted by the Volunteer Corps in Emergency Situations in Nyhalim Bay, will take place at 1 pm. Tuesday, 29 September, and will be available online via Webinar for a maximum of 100 viewers. The state experts are Althea Rizzo, Ph.D., coordinator of the Geological Hazards Program for Emergency Management in Oregon, and Jonathan Allan, Ph.D., coastal geomorphologist for the Division of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI).

Tillamook County Emergency Director Lt. Gordon McCraw will also be on hand to address the county’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent wildfires.

A large-scale earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the coast of Oregon is expected to cause a catastrophic tsunami. Coast residents and visitors will only have 10-20 minutes to reach safety, and the only way to get there is on foot.

Rizzo will define the role her agency plays in emergency planning and response.

“Since we can expect long-term isolation after a major event, I’m sure it will emphasize what we always emphasize,” said Linda Kozlovsky, EVCNB President. “Learn to take care of ourselves until outside help arrives.”

Alan will discuss the latest developments regarding his agency’s recent “Beat the Wave” study of the Nihalim Bay area. The study, completed late last year, analyzed the impact of broken roads, collapsed bridges, landslides and liquefaction on people trying to get out of the danger zone.

“The study identified the most efficient escape route,” Kozlovsky said. “Then I calculated how fast people needed to walk or run, and whether escape was possible.”
