The opening of a museum on a nuclear accident in Fukushima

The first public museum seeking to relay the legacy of the 2011 nuclear accident opened Sunday in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan.

The Memorial Museum of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster is located in Futaba Town, where the evacuation warning was partially lifted in March.

Futaba is one of the host cities of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant – the site of one of the world’s worst nuclear accidents.

Three of the plant’s reactors melted after a massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

The Preservation Museum contains large screens showing what the communities looked like in the aftermath of the accident, and how the residents were evacuated.

About 150 items and videos are shown, highlighting the initial confusion, decontamination efforts, and the protracted impact of the accident.

One of the items is a whiteboard written with words and numbers as officials frantically dealt with the disaster that unfolded at a government base near the factory.

Locals will also be stationed at the museum to share experiences.

The opening was originally scheduled for July to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics, which symbolizes recovery from the 2011 disaster. However, it was delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Olympic Games have also been postponed for one year.
