Ranibukhari’s historic restoration is nearly complete

This is an example of how important archaeological sites were built

After nearly five and a half years of drought followed by the 2015 earthquakes that destroyed the Jubalishur temple in the middle of the pool, the authorities are on the verge of completing the historic Ranibukhari renovation.

Water from Bagmati River at Sundarijal was used to fill Ranipokhari. The process is expected to be completed by 4:00 PM tomorrow. The Ministry of Water Supply used an old drinking water pipeline to bring water from Sundarijal to Panipokari. From Banebukhari, a new pipeline dedicated to distributing water from the Milamchi River was used to fill the pool.

The 163-meter by 126-meter pond is filled to a height of 5.2 feet.

After the Ranibukhari regeneration, it will contain approximately 30 million liters of water.

The pond already had 10 million liters of water from the past monsoons and a few pits underground. However, these openings were closed after activists demanded action to conserve the groundwater. Authorities now have a facility to recharge the pond with rainwater collected from the roofs of Trichandra College in the east, Durbar High School in the west and Bisugioti complex in the north.

Raju Manandar, the expert appointed by the National Reconstruction Authority, said they also have a plan to refill the pond with water collected from the Jamal area in the monsoons if the pond does not automatically start to refill.

Ranipukhar has become a symbol of the government’s method of reconstruction of important archaeological sites after the earthquake.

Locals and heritage activists first objected to the Kathmandu metropolitan city’s proposal to convert Ranibukhari into a recreational pool and rebuild it with modern building materials.

Locals and activists demanded that Ranibukhari be rebuilt according to archaeological principles to protect its value.

By that time, the local government had already dried the pond using multi-level water pumping machines for several days. KMC also hired contractors and used the concrete after the important monumental bridge dating back to the mid-17th century was removed.

This led to a cultural awareness among the people, who also demanded that the Balgopaleshwor Temple be rebuilt in Granthakut model.

The Balgopaleshwor Temple and the pool surrounding it were built by King Pratap Malla in 1670, in Granthakut style.

However, the original temple was destroyed in an earthquake in 1934. Then the Rana rulers of that time rebuilt the temple in the Gumbaz style.

After years of wrangling and breaching more than a dozen deadlines, the authorities finally agreed to rebuild the pool according to the archaeological principles of the Mala Age.

Likewise, the Reconstruction Authority changed from KMC to the Department of Antiquities and was finally in the hands of the National Reconstruction Authority.

The NRA, in about one year, has nearly completed the reconstruction at a cost of 26 million rupees through community participation.

“Ranibukhari has become a symbol of how important monuments can be rebuilt,” said Manandhar, the expert appointed by the NRA for reconstruction.
