Gateway finds innovative ways to attract customers, and looks to the future

Salt Lake City – On a Friday night, the street across the Gateway Shopping Center was vendors instead of cars as people wandered looking at the unique items for sale.

It’s part of the mall’s vision to help mobilize business and keep people coming during the pandemic. There are events like movies, yoga in the park, and more every week.

“The Gateway has always had to innovate, so we’ve always had to pivot and think outside the box, and for us, we just keep doing it,” said Jacqueline Briggs, a spokeswoman for The Gateway.

In 2016, Vestar Corporation bought The Gateway and promised to revitalize the shopping center. The group has formed a Tenant Action Committee to help businesses survive COVID-19.

A few national retailers have closed stores across the country, including some within The Gateway: Victoria’s Secret, California Pizza Kitchen, Punch Bowl Social and Buckle, Briggs said.

“What we’ve seen, even as a surprise to us, are opportunities for local businesses and new concepts that we’re really looking forward to filling in. We have some exciting news coming in October about these new changes.

Although some stores have closed, in reality the business is steadily improving for others.

“At first it was like going downhill, then things got worse, then gradually improved over the past two months,” said Samantha Kirk, general manager at Chedda Burger.

Kirk said events at the outdoor shopping center helped the business.

“It got to the point where I can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” she said.

Briggs said the downtown Salt Lake City winter market will be in The Gateway this year after the Rio Grande building was damaged by the earthquake. There will also be free Halloween movies in October.

Construction work on The Gateway is scheduled to begin in January 2021.
