A Delicate Redevelopment of St. James’s Anglican Church.

At one point, a dirty music venue, the former St. James Presbyterian Church in Adelaide Road in Newtown, opposite Wellington Hospital, was completely rebuilt in 2016, to create five luxury apartments.

The conversion work saved this capital’s landmark, which was considered an earthquake risk, and was carried out by award-winning architect Simon Novak of Novak + Middleton Architects, who described the project as “exciting”. Amen for that.

The strange truth

Olde Kirk still resembles a church in many ways.

A former 19th-century Mornington Presbyterian Church in Dunedin was bought on whim by the family that turned it into a home.

Unusual in most conversions, because the family chose to keep the main hall open, rather than dividing it, of all the houses on our list, this home looks more like a church.

“We didn’t want to cut any windows, or do anything that would keep the space closed,” the owner told Stuff’s Lee Overton in August, when the home was brought to market.

An absolute classic, ecumenical design, the Old Knox is all the church’s transformations have to be: sensitive to the building’s history, while still being a comfortable and charming family home.

Deserted when its owners found it, builder Andy Parker, who transformed it, wanted to celebrate the building’s most remarkable feature, the curved roof.

The 104-year-old church turned by builder Mark O’Connor into the heart of rock and roll.

Acoustics is one of the best things about church conversions.

Designed to amplify the chant of congregations, the buildings are also great for other types of music, as found by builder Mark O’Connor when he transformed this small, flowing chapel in Manawatu.

O’Connor said: “The part of the church is our main hall, and if my wife and kids go out to spend the day home alone, I can blow up a little Sepultura or something like that and that’s cool.”
