Analysis of earthquakes in and around Delhi in the past 20 years does not reveal any specific pattern: Vardan

ITU Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardan said on Wednesday that analysis of earthquakes that occurred in and around Delhi in the past 20 years did not show any specific pattern in the frequency of earthquakes which could indicate increased seismic activity.

A total of 745 earthquakes were recorded by the National Network of Seismology, including 26 such events in the National Capital Region (NCR), over the past three years (September 2017 to August 2020) with a magnitude of three and above (on the Richter scale) the minister said .

In a written response to a question in Lok Sabha, Vardhan said over the past few months (April 12 to July 3, 2020), four earthquakes with strength in the range of 3.3 to 4.7; And 13 smaller earthquakes, including aftershocks (of magnitude 2.5 – 3), were recorded by NCR.

However, he said it was difficult to say that any increase in seismic activity is an indication of the possibility of major earthquakes.

“ The analysis by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an institute affiliated with the Department of Earth Sciences, on earthquakes of the past 20 years that occurred in and around Delhi, does not show any specific pattern in the frequency of earthquakes that could indicate any increase in earthquake activity, Vardan.

However, during recent years, seismic monitoring in Delhi has improved greatly and even low-volume events are automatically detected and quickly spread through the NCS website and mobile app.

“It might give the impression that the seismic activity was enhanced in the area, which was not previously observed. It is difficult to say that any increase in earthquakes is an indication of the possibility of a major earthquake.”

Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded 198 earthquakes during this period (September 2017 to August 2020), while Jammu and Kashmir recorded 98 earthquakes. The minister told the House of Representatives that they were both known in areas with high seismic activities.
