MP Mizoram urges the center to grant compensation to those affected by earthquakes

A parliament official, Rajya Sabha, from Mizoram K. Vanalvina, said he had urged the center to provide compensation to those affected by the earthquakes in Mizoram, and to send a team to investigate the cause of frequent earthquakes in the state.

The deputy requested the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Disaster Management Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to immediately send an investigation team to Mizoram, to provide compensation to the earthquake victims and provide adequate facilities related to earthquake management for Mizoram, the official said.

Representative Rajya Sabha also raised the issue in the upper house of parliament on Tuesday and said that earthquakes shook Mizoram Shambaye and some parts of Searship near the Myanmar border on more than 100 occasions during this year, damaging many homes and affecting people.

Vanlalvina said that he met with officials from the Federation’s Earth Sciences Ministry and urged them to send an investigation team to Mizoram to assess the reality of the Earth and the causes of frequent earthquakes in the state.

A series of earthquakes has hit several parts of Mizoram, including Shamhai, Sittual, Seha and Searship since June 18.

The last earthquake was reported on September 20.

Mizoram disaster management and rehabilitation officials said residents have felt earthquakes on a number of occasions since June.

They said more than 280 homes were damaged in the Chamhai area causing a financial loss of over 316.35 rupees.

Officials also said that the government is making great efforts to deal with the earthquakes by sending geologists to the affected areas and doctors to assess the health status of those affected and provide assistance to the victims.

Deputy Commissioner Maria CT Zwali said the affected families received financial and material assistance.
