“I’m blessed, I’m lucky to be here today” – CBS Denver

Ft Carson, Colorado (CBS4) – A young soldier, whose leg was injured in the disastrous 2010 earthquake in Haiti, was recently treated for a serious problem with the same leg. Junior Tunis is grateful to his doctors in Denver.

He is proud of serving the nation that gave him hope and the homeland.

“I would like to say I’m lucky, I’m lucky to be here today,” Tunis told CBS4 health specialist Cathy Walsh.

He is with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Carson. Spc. Tunisia’s dream comes true 10 years after surviving a nightmare.

Tunisia said, “I thought I was going to die.”

More than 220,000 people were killed in the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. Tunisia, 14 at the time, was one of the 300,000 injured.

He said, “I was under the concrete.” “I was trapped there for eight hours.”

His right leg was deformed.

“Basically you can see the bone sticking out of it,” Tunisia said.

He underwent surgery in Haiti, then 15 operations in Miami.

“There was a lot of pain.” “I was crying most of the time,” he explained.

After a year in Florida, Tunis spoke to CBS through an interpreter.

He said, “I have to say thank God, and I have to thank you.”

In 2019, Tunisia joined the military, a goal he set after his admiration for the American forces in Haiti.

“They were helping. I feel like this is something I wanted to do. I want to be like these guys.”

In March 2020, he sent the pain in the leg in Tunisia to specialists in Denver.

“This is an aggressive, but benign tumor that you can see has eroded a large portion of his lower leg,” said Dr. Daniel Lerman, an orthopedic oncologist at Presbyterian St. Luke Medical Center.

Lerman removed the tumor and placed it in a bone cement and metal plate. Tunisia resilient survivor appeared again.

Tunis said: “If you pray enough and devote yourself to achieving your dream, there is nothing you cannot complete.”

He dreams of returning to Haiti one day to do for his community what the American soldiers have done for him.
