The suspect in the London police shooting was “handcuffed” when he was shot – BBC News

Tributes have been paid to police sergeant Matiu Ratana, who was shot dead at a Croydon surveillance center in south London. The 23-year-old suspect, who later turned his gun on himself, is in serious condition in hospital. A police guard said the suspect was in a surveillance suite with his hands on his wrist when he opened fire. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dama Cressida Dick said the loss of a “colleague she loves very much” was “mourning” the loss of her “great height and great heart”. Originally from New Zealand, Sergeant Rartna, Matt, served in the Met for nearly 30 years. Clive Myrie introduces BBC News at Ten to Daniel Sandford, a reporter for home affairs at Croydon.
