Will Seahawks still have a homefield advantage over cowboys?

Seahawks audiences, known as “The 12” (as in 12th Man), can increase the volume of games at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.

How loud, you ask?

It suffices to shake the ground and record the seismic signals, known locally as “fan earthquakes”. This is not an exaggeration, it is a scientific fact.

I have been on the sidelines of CenturyLink Field six times for Cowboys-Seahawks as a Sideline reporter for the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network. And while I’ve never felt the vibration of the ground, I can promise you that when “12” raises the volume up to 11 “as we say we are Spinal Tap fans, it feels like the sound cuts through your skull.”

As measured in decibels, when “The 12” set a Guinness World Records record for highest stadium in 2013 during a 49ers-Seahawks match, the noise level reached 137.6 dB.

How loud is 136.6 decibels? The equivalent of air raid sirens (about 135 dB), and louder than a balloon (125), riveter (115), or jackhammer (110).

What is the top of the CenturyLink field in overall volume? Few things … but a few. They are the firing of a missile (180), the detonation of a rifle (160), the firing of a fighter (150), and the cracker (140).

And to give well-deserved Chiefs fans, Arrowhead Stadium was previously higher than CenturyLink Field. “The 12” fans surpassed the highest Guinness crowd when he scored 142.2 dB in a home game in September 2014 against the Patriots.

When the cowboys travel to Seattle this weekend, they won’t have to wear earplugs. Heck, you won’t even have to attack using “silent count” to express time to catch the ball. Seahawks have enjoyed a homefield for many years, not only due to visiting irregularities having trouble communicating due to crowd noise, but also feeding on fan energy.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy indicated earlier this week when he told reporters, “Playing 11 in 11 (instead of 11 in 12) is something I’m looking forward to.”
