Just over 24 hours after the city of Malibu held a virtual workshop on earthquake preparedness, a 4.6-magnitude Shaker shook Angelino out of bed Friday night. “Basic facilities can be restored relatively quickly as well,” Kaplan continued. “These are known faults. However, I would like to remind everyone that the Northridge earthquake was caused by a previously unknown fault. Therefore, the area may be more seismically active than we know.”

In the event of an earthquake in San Andreas, Malibu might not be physically damaged, but “utilities such as water, electricity and gas are likely to be affected to a much greater degree,” according to Kaplan. Support may be slow to arrive in Malibu. Kaplan advised: “It is very important that residents of Malibu and Southern California be self-sufficient for two to three weeks in the event of such a disaster.”

Experts advise that you have a plan and some essentials on hand, such as the earthquake kit by the bed. This may include a flashlight, closed toe shoes, comfortable clothing, and work gloves.

Tsunami risk after an earthquake is also a possibility. People near the coast are advised to go inland and upwards ASAP and safely.

Malibu City Hall is participating in the annual International Earthquake Elimination Day on October 15th, as part of an effort to get schools and workplaces to practice earthquake drills.
