Bardarbunga (Bárðarbunga) is a large central volcano located under the 500-meter-thick Vatnajokull glacier in the center of the country. It is located at the intersection between the eastern and northern volcanic rift regions in the area believed to be the current center of the mantle hotspot under Iceland. There have been about 300-400 volcanic eruptions in Bardaronga during the past 10,000 years, which include only 23 historical eruptions (about the past 1000 years), that is, they seem to be erupting at approximate rates. Twice in every century, the last time occurred in 1910. A massive explosive volcanic eruption (VEI 6) in 1477 resulted in a large deposition of ash and pumice. About 8,600 years ago, Bardarbunga produced the largest known lava flow in the last 10,000 years on Earth (over 21 cubic kilometers in volume). Lava erupted from the Vedivoten fissure system and traveled more than 100 km to the southern coast.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) recorded an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale at a depth of 9.1 km at Pararunga volcano at 00:06 local time yesterday. A few smaller aftershocks have been discovered in the area. Tremors did not show significant differences. Earthquakes of this magnitude (4.8 M) were detected in April and January of this year.
