Don’t panic: Experts say reports of imminent massive earthquake and tsunami in Java have been misinterpreted
Reports of a possible massive earthquake and tsunami in Java sparked tremors for people in Indonesia, but experts played down these concerns and said they were the result of a misreading of a scientific study.
The past few days have seen widespread reports of a possible massive earthquake and the resulting gigantic tsunami reaching a height of about 20 meters along the southern coast of Java, both in mainstream media and social media.
Adding credibility to the story seemed to be the fact that it was based on a study by researchers at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
However, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) downplayed the concerns by stating that the study was published last year and that it already contains recommendations for disaster mitigation in worst-case scenarios, not an imminent forecast. Major collision between tectonic plates.
“We hope that the public will raise the level of scientific literacy, and we hope they do not rush to panic with all the information about the potential disaster,” said Dariono, head of BMKG’s earthquake and tsunami mitigation department, in a press release yesterday.
The problem, according to Dariono’s theory, is the general tendency to consume small pieces of information rather than reading things in depth.
“People should not easily be fed with heartbreaking media headlines announcing an impending disaster,” he said.
ITB researchers also confirmed that the study does not explicitly conclude that Java will be shaken by a massive earthquake and tsunami.
Economically, however, there has been some damage as hoteliers along the southern coast of Indonesia’s most populous island complained about residency cancellations after the story was widely publicized.
That Indonesia is so paranoid about the tsunami is completely understandable. On December 26, 2004, a devastating 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 people across the Indian Ocean region, including about 170,000 in Indonesia.
