World Rabies Day 2020
The new Anti-Rabies Forum wants to accelerate progress in eliminating human deaths from rabies through dogs by 2030. The disease continues to kill one person every nine minutes – nearly half of them children.
The forum, launched by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) – global agencies responsible for human health, animal health and food and agriculture – will bring together partners from government institutions, the human and animal health and environmental sectors, the private sector, civil society, as well as research and academia. It aims to increase understanding of required policies and research work and to improve coordination (including resource mobilization) and information exchange between partners.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said:
“We can eliminate rabies in humans only if we take better control of dogs and radically improve access to treatment and care – especially among the poor and marginalized groups who suffer the most from this terrible disease.”
FAO Director-General Dr Qu Dongyu said:
“Although the coronavirus pandemic presents us with unprecedented challenges, we can and must turn the disadvantage into an advantage. We now have the opportunity to strengthen One Health collaboration and regional collaboration, especially to improve health systems and animal surveillance. Collaborating on rabies is a great way to put these ideas into practice. “
The Director General of RES, Dr. Monique Eloit, stressed the need for joint efforts against rabies:
“This is a disease we know how to defeat, but there is no single solution. We need to work together in all sectors of human and animal health and with affected communities. If we do, elimination is possible, and in the process we will also build stronger systems to detect and control others. diseases. ”
FAO, RES and WHO are committed to operationalizing the “One Health” program, which promotes a policy approach that links health, humanitarian and animal interventions. In the case of rabies, this means coordinated investment in mass vaccination of dogs as a public health initiative, improved surveillance and data collection, as well as community awareness and ensuring access to affordable rabies treatment for humans (post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP).
Up to 99 percent of cases of rabies in humans are caused by dog bites, and rabies control is considered a ‘model’ of the disease to more broadly improve zoonotic disease control. However, investment in dog vaccinations, rabies monitoring and control systems remains low in most countries where rabies occurs.
Scientific research and field evidence show that mass vaccination campaigns covering 70 percent of the at-risk dog population can provide rabies immunity and are the only real way to end the infectious disease cycle between animals and humans. This can dramatically reduce mortality from rabies in humans.
