Reconstructing life two years after the devastating earthquake in Sulawesi – Indonesia

Rossati and her youngest daughter were at home when a series of powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Indonesia.

“My daughter and I were selling yellow rice when the earthquake struck, while my husband and older son were still working outside the house.

“It was very strong. I thought the whole world would be destroyed. My daughter and I were stuck in the house. I was sure we would end up dying.”

“I was very shaken and couldn’t stand. Everything around me was shaking,” says Rossiati, recalling the traumatic events of September 28, 2018.

One of the earthquakes, which had a magnitude of 7.5, caused a tsunami. Big waves hit Palu and other settlements, sweeping away homes and buildings. Soil liquefaction – a rare event in which earth flows like a fluid – has submerged many buildings in mudflows.

Russia witnessed the effects of this second devastating earthquake. He destroyed half of Lulu Village, damaged nearly every house in the village, and killed at least 26 villagers.

Their livelihoods were washed away, thousands of villagers were displaced and basic services crippled.

Rossati, her family and other village members spent two weeks sleeping in the open under a tarpaulin. They spent another six months in tents while their home was being repaired.

Islamic Relief provided life-saving assistance to the survivors

In Sulawesi, our emergency teams have distributed food, water, and hygiene items as well as items such as tarpaulins and blankets – to reach nearly 19,000 families.

We also provided special food for malnourished children and promoted good hygiene practices to stop the spread of disease.

In the months following the disaster, our focus shifted to helping Sulawesi families rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

Islamic Relief provided Russian and her family with basic items such as blankets, hygiene items, and household items and also helped repair their home.

We are continuing to restore life in Indonesia

We run an Islamic microfinance scheme in Sulawesi that gives families cash to set up small businesses, while a separate program supports others to start a mushroom-growing business. The Russian family is part of the project, and they were given cash to help them reopen their yellow rice business.

With Islamic Relief support, a Russian woman and other women from her village were able to create a mushroom-growing group. This provides them with a reliable source of income and helped restore their livelihoods.

In addition to giving survivors the support they need to earn a living again, Islamic Relief is rebuilding schools in the tsunami-ravaged Bakuli.

After two years of the horrific events of the earthquake, we have supported those affected so that they can resume their normal lives. However, some others still face an uncertain future with our recovery plan which focuses on supporting communities to build a brighter future, we are doing our best to help them.

Our current projects in Indonesia include helping families restore their livelihoods and rebuild local economies and industries. We also provide comprehensive disaster risk reduction training for schools, religious buildings and communities.
