Tajana stresses preparation of evacuation routes on the island of Morotai

Ternate, N. Maluku (Antara) – The North Maluku Disaster Response Team (Tagana) has urged the Morotai Island Provincial Government to prepare evacuation routes to save local residents from the unforeseen and damaging effects of disasters as the island is vulnerable to earthquakes and tidal waves.

In fact, many residents of the island’s coastal areas lack adequate awareness of disaster preparedness and mitigation, Tagana – North Maluku bureau chief Ahmed Baliji told Antar here Monday.

He explained that the district administration should prepare evacuation routes to safer places, while the local population should be educated and involved in regular disaster response exercises to better equip them to save themselves in the event of a disaster.

The Indonesian Ministerial Regulation for Social Affairs No. 128/2011 on Disaster Preparedness Village states the need for disaster preparedness in every village. To this end, community members must be well educated, trained, and prepared, Baliji noted.

Earthquakes regularly strike different parts of Indonesia because it is located on the Pacific Belt, also known as the Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

Morotai Island, home to the historical remnants of WWII, is part of the Ring of Fire. And earthquakes shook him frequently.

On June 4, 2020, for example, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the district, damaging many homes and public facilities. He noted that a 4.1-magnitude earthquake shook the region again on September 26, 2020.
