Chester received the 2019 Paul G Silver Award for Distinguished Scientific Service

Citation Judith S. Chester

Professor Judith (“Judy”) S. Chester is an eminent scientist who uses a powerful combination of experiments and field observations to understand earthquake faults. Nevertheless, this award recognizes her exemplary efforts on behalf of the wider community.

In 2004, the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) recruited Judy to help lead the effort in fault-and-rupture mechanics. I played a key role in guiding this project through clear thinking and constructive suggestions. She later served on the Board of Directors of the Supreme Committee for Projects and Productivity, then again in a more prominent role as Vice Chairman of the Planning Committee. As Vice President, she directs the research project to a large and diverse research community. This is hard work, it’s important, and it’s a community work that’s a huge commitment of time and testifies to Judy’s selfless character. Judy has now co-led the SCEC for more than 15 years. However, she did much more than that during that time.

From 2010 to 2016, Judy assumed leadership roles in the AGU’s Physical Properties Group of Earth Matter. From 2013 to 2017, she was a member of the DEFORM Executive Committee. Since 2013, the National Science Foundation’s EarthScope office has managed physical samples from the San Andreas Fault in Depth Observatory (SAFOD), the community resource for storing and making available cores retrieved from San Andreas. SAFOD was a key component of EarthScope, which Paul Silver, to whom this award was assigned, helped launch it. The efforts of the Judi community are particularly impressive because it implemented many of them simultaneously, all while maintaining its active research program.

Judy is an outstanding scientist who has unselfishly contributed her time and talents to support a broader research community that extends to the three sponsoring departments at Arabian Gulf University and beyond. Jodi Chester is an exceptional recipient of the 2019 Paul G Silver Award.

Response

Thank you, Greg, for your thoughtful quote. I am really honored to receive the Paul G. Silver Award for Outstanding Scientific Service from the Departments of Tectonic Physics, Seismology and Geodesy at AGU. This award is also a tribute to the work of many individuals who have envisioned, built, and supported two major science programs that I have been very fortunate to participate in, the SAFOD EarthScope Initiative and the Southern California Earthquake Center. The foundational scientific vision of each program and their specific research priorities have intrigued me and energized me for most of my career. Participating in these endeavors has given me the opportunity to interact with two large, interrelated research communities focused on understanding all aspects of earthquake behavior. They opened multiple avenues for participation, helped me grow as a scientist, and introduced me to interdisciplinary research. Through their examples, I was introduced to collaborative leadership, and I had the privilege of returning these gifts through service.

There are many individuals that I would like to get to know but I can only name a few of them. Firstly, SAFOD leaders, Steve Hickman, Mark Zoback, and William Ellsworth, for their hard work over many years; And Terry Tullis for inviting me to the first SCEC Fault and Rock Mechanics (FARM) workshop in 2002 and opened my eyes to the world of SCEC. This meeting changed my career and put me on a path with Terry, Ruth Harris, Nadia Labosta and many others to advance FARM-related priorities within the SCEC community. I thank Tom Jordan and John McRaney for their contributions to SCEC over many years, and the SCEC Business Office, which is now led by Tran Huynh expertise. Greg, it has been a pleasure to work under your thoughtful and experienced leadership. Finally, I want to thank Fred, my colleague, collaborator, and partner.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
