An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Pararbonga just after midnight, Freitaplajic reported this morning. Several smaller aftershocks followed, the largest of which measured 2.0 degrees. The earthquake and its aftershocks occurred within a thirteen-minute period between five and eighteen minutes after midnight.

The most recent earthquakes of this magnitude – also a magnitude of 4.8 – occurred in January and April of this year. The tremors of April were reported by Grapevine here.

The earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale, which struck the city of Grimsy on Friday, was followed by smaller shock waves, as the ground shook 2.9 on the Richter scale 13 kilometers northeast of the island before 6 a.m. Yesterday morning, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck the same area.
