A 5.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Sumba Barat Daya

 



Kubang, e Nusa Tenggara (Antara) – A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck southwest of the Cody sub-district in Sumba Barat Daya district, East Nusa Tenggara province, Monday morning, although no tsunami warning was issued.

Robert Wahyu, head of the Meteorological Agency – Kubang Office, indicated that the epicenter, which occurred at 10:44 a.m. local time, was 237 kilometers (km) from the Cody sub-district, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Earthquakes regularly hit different parts of Indonesia because it is located on the Pacific Belt, also known as the Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

On September 6, 2020, for example, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Halmahera Barat district in North Maluku Province, but no tsunami warning was issued.

On August 24, 2020, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake jolted Pangandaran in West Java, although no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake that struck several regions in Central Sulawesi province was among the deadliest earthquakes to hit Indonesia in the past two years.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake followed by the tsunami that struck Palu City, Dongala, Paringi Mutong and Siji provinces on September 28, 2018, killed 2,102 people, injured 4,612 others, and lost 680 others.

A total of 68,451 homes were seriously damaged, while 78,994 people were displaced.

Ultimately the authorities and humanitarian workers made the decision to bury the large numbers of decomposing bodies in mass graves.

Meanwhile, the two deadly disasters caused an estimated material losses of 15.29 trillion rupees.

The capital of Palu County was hit by the brunt of the disaster, with material damage and losses recording 7.6 trillion rupees, or 50 percent of the total estimate, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Material damage and loss in the Siji region was recorded at 9 trillion rupees or 32.1 per cent; 2.1 trillion rupees, or 13.8 percent, was registered in Dongala District, and 631 billion rupees, or 4.1 percent, were registered in Barigye Mutung District.
