California earthquakes: two earthquakes rock an area along the “Ring of Fire”

Officials said two earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.4 struck near the same area in Northern California within hours of each other over the weekend.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded two earthquakes Sunday in the state within approximately six hours of each other, both with magnitude 3.4 on the Richter scale.

Scales between the third and fourth levels on the scale “are felt by people inside, especially on the upper floors of buildings,” according to the USGS.

The first earthquake was measured less than 6.2 miles northeast of Milpitas at about 3.54 PM local time at a depth of 3.3 miles. CBSF reported that residents felt the earthquake as far as San Francisco.

The second earthquake was reported at around 10 p.m. local time at a depth of 2.7 miles in the same area that covers the Calaveras Reservoir, the East Bay Times reported.

There were no reports of damage or injuries from the two quakes.

The East Bay Times reported that the reservoir experienced two earthquakes of similar magnitude a little over a month ago with two earthquakes of 3.3 and 2.9 depths on August 17.

The region is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a series of approximately 25,000 miles of volcanoes and seismically active sites that define the Pacific Ocean known for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Activity along the ring of fire results in about 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes and is home to an estimated 75 percent of the planet’s volcanoes.
