If you’re like me, you’re still commenting on something Donald Trump said in 2015. To be fair, a lot of things keep me awake at night. I don’t think I’ve gotten a full night’s sleep since I learned about the books.

To be doubly fair, it’s not really Trump’s comments, but rather their ramifications. First, his argument is nonsense. The claim is that work is more valuable than having life on this planet. It is strangely similar to the argument it has used for COVID-19 in that its first priority is to open businesses even with an objective risk to the lives of the people who run / sponsor these companies.

Second, Trump and others who make comments about reducing environmental protection as stifling business are construed as a denial of climate change. Trump knows that climate change is real. They all do. That’s why Trump has increased flood protection for his coastal golf courses. This is why he did the same for his property in Florida, a state that will require a diving visit if sea level rise continues.

At every opportunity he sees, Trump has reduced or eliminated protections and regulations designed to prevent or slow down the thing his property protects against. Trump knows that the Paris climate agreement, restrictions on exploration in Alaska, and the presence of the Environmental Protection Agency are the way we fight climate change. He knows climate change is real and he knows people will die and places will be destroyed because of it. As long as they aren’t people or places he can take advantage of, he just doesn’t care.

However, the real reason why I keep these comments up for the night is that I start planning what I will do when this “little” turns out to be insufficient. I am thinking about my daughter and how I will feed her when droughts and hurricanes are the rule rather than the exception. If we were already witnessing massive fires in the west and accumulating hurricanes in the east, what would it look like with more regulation?

I lay awake at night trying to figure out where I would be able to get food and water after we had hit a hurricane / earthquake hybrid. What tools will I need and what will society look like if I don’t live in the “small” Trump environment? I like to think that the survival skills I gained in Scouting will help, but I have never earned the Merit Badge for Apocalypse Survival.

It’s easy to think that we’re protected here in the middle of the country, but that’s a fatal assumption. Ask farmers who struggle with less rain and too much rain at the same time. Ask O’Hare air traffic controllers and they’ll tell you that the past 10 years of weather patterns have made flying chaotic at best. As I highly recommend, talk to the Audubon Society. They are a bunch of great people but they’ll also tell you about birds you won’t see anymore because we’ve ruined their breeding grounds.

I probably won’t sleep well no matter what happens. Looks like I offended Sandman at some point. However, I will sleep better, knowing that the country is fighting climate change rather than sacrificing me and my family for it.
