A swarm of small earthquakes hits the Gulf region

A swarm of small earthquakes, including the 3.3 earthquake that shook parts of San Jose on Tuesday, have been recorded in the Bay Area for the past 48 hours.

Two earthquakes beside the Calaveras Fault struck San Jose within 15 minutes of each other, according to The Chronicle’s Quake Tracker, which processes data from the US Geological Survey.

The first earthquake, with magnitude 3.0, struck around 8:50 am 11 miles northeast of San Jose. A second earthquake hit the same area shortly after, with a magnitude of 3.3.

A 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck the area about 11 miles southeast of Hollister around midnight Tuesday.

A 3.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the area 14 miles southwest of Clearlake Thursday at around 7:42 a.m.

Two other earthquakes – with a magnitude of 3.4 – were recorded about 11 miles northeast of San Jose on Sunday. The earthquakes occurred within six hours of each other.

US Geological Survey seismologist Elizabeth Cochran said recent seismic events in the region began in August with 20 small earthquakes – the largest earthquake of magnitude 3.5 – that shook San Jose between August 17 and August 19.

Seismologists cannot predict when earthquake swarms will occur or how long they will last, but Cochran said that these swarms are “typical” behavior for a calaverase fault.

“Once every few years, we get a set of earthquakes in a local area over a period of two to two weeks, and then the earthquakes usually go away,” Cochran said.

The Calaveras Fault has the ability to release a magnitude 7 earthquake. Most recently, Morgan Hill was hit by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in 1984.
