Left’s unhealthy interest in Amy Connie Barrett’s adopted children

After news emerged in 2010 of an earthquake in Haiti that killed more than 250,000 people and displaced 1.5 million survivors, most Americans noticed the tragedy and thought to themselves how horrific it was, and then resumed their daily lives. Others have gone a little further, generously donating money and goods to aid organizations like the Red Cross. Then there were people like Amy Connie Barrett, who was chosen by President Trump to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, the Barrett family adopted a young child named John Peter from an orphanage in Haiti. This was the second time they had adopted from Haiti. Several years ago, they took an orphan girl named Vivian. During an interview last year at Notre Dame Club in Washington, DC, Judge Barrett, who sits on the 7th U.S. Court of Appeals, discussed her adoptive children.

“We knew we wanted to adopt internationally – the wait for local adoption was very, very long – and there were a lot of children in need,” she said. “Vivian is amazing. She was 14 months old when she got home and couldn’t make any sounds at that point. She could not pull herself into a standing position, and she was wearing clothes in size from 0 to 3 months because she was suffering from malnutrition.

Judge Barrett said she and her husband, Jesse, were told at the time that Vivienne might never speak. “She was very sick [that] She didn’t have much practice making vocalizations and she wasn’t spoken to much. ”Today, that has all changed.“ Vivienne is incredibly athletic now, and believe me, the speech was not a problem. ”“ I was looking at her one day in a gym, ”she joked. Sports and I just thought about how miraculous how powerful it is. “

Most reasonable people agree that Barrett’s decision to adopt a sick orphan and then another after the worst natural disaster in Haitian history was not just admiration but heroic. However, Judge Barrett was attacked by prominent figures on the political left anger that the adoption was cross-ethnic. On Saturday, Abram X Kennedy, a professor at Boston University and author of the best-selling book “How to be Anti-Racism,” questioned the judge’s motives. “Some white colonists adopted black children,” he wrote on Twitter. They “civilized” these “wild” children in the “superior” ways of white people, while using them as props in images of lifelong denial, while excluding these children’s biological parents from the image of humanity.

Ruth Ben Geat, New York University historian and political commentator on CNN, wonders if Vivien and John Peter weren’t adopted as much as they were kidnapped. “Many authoritarians have taken over children of color for adoption by white Christians,” she wrote on Twitter. “The Pinochet regime did it with indigenous children, and the Nazis took Polish Aryans in search of German families. Trump takes immigrant children for adoption by Evangelicals.”

It would be wrong to laugh at this as a quick anti-Trump. The kind of racist hype and paranoia caused by the progressive left long predates the current administration and will continue whether or not Trump is reelected next month. The National Association of Black Social Workers first declared its opposition to interracial adoption in 1972. In a statement, the group “took a violent stand against the placement of black children in white homes for any reason” and described such arrangements as only “unnatural”. But it is “unnecessary” and harmful to the physical and psychological development of black children.

But what does the data show? In their 2018 book, Rescuing International Adoption, Mark Montgomery and Erin Powell assessed the extensive literature on interracial adoption and stated that it does not reveal any evidence of harm to black children. By comparing black adopters in white families with those from black families, there is no statistical difference between the groups in terms of self-esteem, self-concept and family integration, and “only a small influence, if any, on objective outcomes such as school performance and behavioral problems”, they write. “The overwhelming conclusion of interracial adoption studies is that it is not bad for children. This greatly weakens the situation for opponents of interracial and transnational adoption on the grounds that it is harmful to children.”

The truth is, there are more black children who need adoption, here and abroad, than black families have expressed a willingness to take them in. Liberals who advocate racial segregation put aesthetic preference over the needs of street children. The question is not whether Vivien and John Peter’s situation is perfect. It’s whether it is better for them to indulge in an orphanage in Haiti or live with their parents in the US who want to take care of them and just happen to be of a different race.
