The debris of the September 11 disaster now washed ashore across Okinawa: the Asahi Shimbun

Plastic containers washed away in the sea after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami began to drift off the beaches of Okinawa Prefecture, leaving residents baffled by the time these items took to travel only 2,000 kilometers.

Yasuhiro Nomura, 47, an Italian restaurant operator on Ishigaki Jima, was walking along a beach on September 9 when he encountered a one-meter-tall aquamarine container on each side with letters for 2005 and the Miyako Fishing Cooperative in Iwate Prefecture.

Nomura said, “At first, I thought it came from Miyakojima Island (in Okinawa), but then I remembered news reports about elements from the Great East Japan Earthquake, which swept ashore.

When the Asahi Shimbun called, an official at the Miyako Fishing Cooperative said the container was one of their container.

Seventeen days later, Ibn Nomura found a similar container washed ashore with letters indicating that it came from Kamaishi, also in Iwate Prefecture, northeastern Japan.

On the island of Ijima, about 450 kilometers northeast of Ishigaki Jima, another plastic container was discovered on September 11th on a beach. That container was also from Kamaishi.

Kiyoshi Tanaka, associate professor at the International Center for Coastal Research, based in Utsushi, Iwate Prefecture, which is part of the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Atmospheric and Oceanic Research, offered his opinion on how the elements wrap up south.

He said that in order for floating objects from the Sanriku coast in the Tohoku region to ride the ocean currents and reach Okinawa, they would have to travel to the Pacific Ocean and travel in a clockwise fashion.

This, he said, indicates that it takes a long time before washing anything ashore in Okinawa.

But Tanaka had no idea why a sudden deluge of these results had occurred. It is speculated that a hurricane or changes in currents around Okinawa may have contributed to the serial washing of debris ashore.

A village education board decided to display items that were found drifting ashore on the island as a means of teaching about natural disasters.
