Emergency feeding stations are ready for Big One

JOYS – Survivors of the upcoming Cascadia earthquake in Kalam County will rest with a hot meal thanks to a five-year volunteer effort to convert surplus US Army kitchens into emergency feeding stations.

Former State Representative Jim Buck of Joyce announced on September 24 a county-wide “kitchen plan” that includes eight tiered free-standing units each of which can feed 600 units.

“There will be a lot of soup and a lot of chili peppers and a lot of macaroni and cheese and macaroni and soup,” Buck said on Wednesday.

“We are not selling steak and chicken.”

The Army MKT-95 and MKT-99 Field Kitchens, four of which were donated by the Quileute tribe, will be placed in strategic locations around Clallam County.

They will be used in the aftermath of the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that geologists expect to happen again along the Cascadia subduction zone off the Pacific coast within a time.

State and local emergency managers say the Cascadia earthquake and tsunami will damage roads and bridges and cut off ground supplies to Clamam County for at least 30 days.

“We don’t know the buildings, restaurants and places with kitchen facilities that will survive the earthquake,” Buck said in a phone interview.

“In previous emergencies like Katrina, Puerto Rico or other earthquakes, you had to bring these things from other parts of the country so having them here in advance is a big plus.”

Buck and his wife Donna visited Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria in 2017 to gather information on the Cascadia scenario.

The kitchen first plan will give respondents immediate access to critical food supplies after a major disaster, he said[بلين][زيشينلي],[كللم]County Fire District No. 3 emergency scheme.

“It also allows the army to use its limited air assets to bring in food and medicine instead of equipment,” Zishinelli said in a press release.

Buck and Zechinelli estimated that the pre-existing kitchens would provide two C-130 flights to ferry other needed supplies to the North Olympic Peninsula.

Sequim Fire District 3 has received two field kitchens, one of which will be housed at the Carlsborg Fire Department maintenance facility and the other will be delivered to Sequim City.

“They are able to feed a large number of people in a relatively short period of time,” Dan Orr, assistant chief of Fire Zone 3, said Wednesday.

Fire department members will learn how to unload, use and repack equipment.

“If you have an old car, you don’t want it to just sit,” Ur said in a phone interview.

“You actually want to drive it because you put oil and stuff in the gears. That’s how I see it.”

Geologists say that the last massive Cascadia earthquake occurred at sea on January 26, 1700.

Ur said the next major earthquake “may not be in our life,” but having plans and equipment would make a big difference if it happened.

Buck spent most of the summer working in the kitchens with other Joyce Emergency Preparedness and Planning (JEPP) volunteers. They used the Army Field Manuals for burners, stoves, trailers, and other equipment.

“I needed something to keep my mind away from COVID, so I worked in kitchens all summer,” Buck said.

The Quileute tribe requested one surplus kitchen for the military several years ago and received four by chance.

“It was a coincidence mistake by someone who will benefit us,” Buck said.

Buck praised the Quilot for its donation of kitchens. Pak said the tribe has its own 40-foot field kitchen that was previously used in the state’s Department of Natural Resources firefighting operations.

“Tribal Police Sargent Kevin Harris, Chief of Police Bill Lyon, Fire Department chief Chris Morganroth and members of the Tribal Council have all helped make this happen,” Buck said.

“Everyone deserves a big thank you.”

The Mecca tribe also had two surplus army kitchens, located on both sides of the reserve in the Neh Bay area.

The Clallam County sheriff’s office has a surplus kitchen used for special occasions and as a backup to a prison kitchen.

Buck said JEPP paid $ 7,000 for its surplus kitchen through the Federal Public Services Administration.

An inventory has been taken of the four kitchens donated by the Quileute tribe. They were cleaned, inspected, repaired and repackaged in trailers.

Buck said: “Hands-on is the only way to learn to use it.” “It’s like a Rubik’s cube if you don’t have the field manuals.”

President Bill Ball said the Forks-based Clallam 1 County Fire District received one field kitchen that will likely be kept at the Beaver Fire Station.

“If we had a Cascadia or a seismic event – or any natural disaster – it would help feed a lot of people in our community,” Paul said Wednesday.

A dump truck was used to transport the kitchens from La Push to Joyce’s Buck home for necessary repairs.

Buck said Lynn Bruch of Bruch and Bruch Construction contributed several days of driver and truck time to towing.

“It took about three weeks for everything to be sorted and piled up before you could figure out what actually went into each unit,” Buck said.

“Three of these units are complete, plus or minus a paring knife.”

Buck is now working on his fourth and final kitchen unit.

The next step in the kitchen plan will be to define which local service groups can operate the field kitchens so that they can be set up as quickly as possible.

The final step will be securing agreements with local food banks and stores to support the kitchen plan.

JEPP has a stock of dried food stored in Joyce.
