Creative Energies has been in the renewable energy business since 2000. We have been in Utah since 2010, and it is our largest office. During COVID-19, we were as anxious as everyone else about what it would mean for our business as everything stopped while everyone was taking breaks to see how this pandemic was going to develop.

About a month into the outbreak, we were hit by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake, causing 60,000 Utahs to lose energy. What surprised us was how busy our phones were after the earthquake. Yutan was inquiring about solar energy and battery storage. We saw an even bigger increase in inquiries after the storm that caused 190,000 people to lose energy.

During the entire pandemic, we have found that the technology we offer has been resilient. We did not have to fire any of our employees. We had stability during a very unstable time.

Now, Rocky Mountain Power wants to reduce our technology to a level of oppression that will cripple our industry. RMP has not adopted solar technology. It was the effort and risk-taking on the part of the small business community, tax incentives and private consumers that over the years brought solar prices down to where they are today.

This move to cripple a growing industry with other companies shutting down and layoffs during the pandemic is irrational. RMP wants to deny Utahns the opportunity to own their own power supply. Now that solar costs are down thanks to those who took the risks years ago, RMP wants to control the technology.

The Public Service Commission should take this into account, along with other factors that the RMP study failed to recognize, such as distribution and avoidance of costs for new energy resources needed to meet Utah’s projected growth. Creative Energies wants to stay in Utah for another 20 years.
