Dr Lucy Jones breaks down the Imperial Valley seismic activity

Christian Galeno of 13 On Your Side spoke with a California seismologist, Dr. Lucy Jones, who has stopped activity in the Imperial Valley and how people can stay safe.

IMPERIAL VALLEY, CA (KYMA / KECY) – No your brain tricks on you, it rocks in Imperial Valley. Seismologists say it is nothing new for the southwestern desert.

“Certainly, at some point in the future, we will have many more,” says Dr. Lucy Jones, “Neighbor Seismologist” in California. “These will do much more damage.”

As of Thursday morning, the United States Geological Survey reported 7 earthquakes greater than 4.0 on the Richter scale. More than 54 earthquakes jolted stronger than 3.0 since Wednesday.

Dr. Jones said, “This type of behavior is characteristic of the Imperial Valley, it is located in what is called the Brawley seismic zone. It contains all these little small defects rather than one big one.”

The swarm that is now occurring south of the Salton Sea, near Westmoreland, is located more than 30 km south of the San Andreas end. It is in the Brawley seismic zone, and it is a common source of swarms. The largest by far is M4.4. Too far from San Andreas to alter the likelihood of an earthquake on it.

The swing comes from the southern Salton Sea region and west of Brawley. Although Dr. Jones says we shouldn’t get anything stronger than 5.4 degrees, this swing pattern has occurred in the past.

“There have been swarms of earthquakes like this every so often, every year or two,” said Dr. Jones. “In the 1970s, we also entered a period of really high activity and now we’re starting to see it again.”

Determining when another series of earthquakes will occur or when a large earthquake will hit California is not realistic. We often think that the weather also helps us predict when an earthquake will happen.

“Earthquakes so far beneath the surface of the earth do not change what is happening,” Dr. Jones said. “There is a tradition of seismic weather in every culture with earthquakes, because we want to have a pattern.”

None of the earthquakes occurred in the Imperial Valley near the San Andreas Fault. They are in the Brawley seismic zone – a network of small faults connecting the San Andreas and Imperial faults. Brawley’s largest event was historically the M5.8

“We need that muscle memory to sit under the table to remember this is the right thing to do,” said Dr. Jones. “I wouldn’t particularly worry about that today, these things are very far away, but in the long run you’re in one of the most active places in California.” .
