Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian troops to be partially withdrawn from Syria during an unexpected visit there on Monday. The Interfax news agency reported that Puthar met with Syrian President Bashar Assad on arrival at Russia’s Hmeimim air base. In March 2016 he had already stated that he intended to withdraw most of his Russian troops. The Russian leader was also present for talks in Egypt and Turkey. “I urge the defense minister and the chief of staff to begin withdrawing the Russian troop group to their permanent bases,” Putin told RIA Novosti news agency. “I have made a decision: a significant part of the contingent of Russian troops stationed in Syria is returning home to Russia,” he added.
