Ladakh experiences a third moderate earthquake of magnitude 5+ in less than two weeks

(Xinhua / Tan Yixiao / IANS) More than 20 earthquakes occurred across Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh in the past 30 days, and on October 8, 2005, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake killed more than 80,000 people near the Line of Control. (LoC) Northern and northeastern India is under constant risk of strong earthquakes due to the movement of tectonic plates along the Himalayas.

The seismic zone across the Himalayan Belt has been very active over the past few months. On Tuesday, October 6, another earthquake of moderate intensity struck Ladakh, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. So far, no injuries or property damage have been reported.

According to the National Seismological Center records, more than 20 earthquakes have occurred across Jammu, Kashmir, Ladak and Himachal Pradesh in the past 30 days. Among these, three earthquakes of moderate intensity over 5.1 on the Richter scale have occurred in Ladakh alone since October 25.

A meteorological ministry official confirmed that an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred at 5.13 am on Monday. The epicenter was in the Ladakh region – near the Indo-Chinese border – and was 10 kilometers deep in the ground. Episodes of light intensity have occurred intermittently in J&K over the past month with foci in the Ladakh-Tibet region.

Seismically speaking, J&K is located in an earthquake-prone area where earthquakes have caused devastation in the past. Amid the Latin American and Caribbean standoff between India and China, reports indicate an increasing number of military personnel in the region. On October 8, 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale killed more than 80,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control in Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir.

The entire Himalayan seismic region is prone to strong earthquakes. The Indian tectonic plate is constantly moving towards the Eurasian plates around this region at a speed of 44 mm / year. As a result of this movement of tectonic plates, pressure builds up, and earthquakes release tension. Many parts of northern, eastern and northeastern India are under constant risk of strong earthquakes due to this phenomenon.

The highest risk areas for high-intensity earthquakes are classified as the fifth in India. The region broadly includes the entire northeast of India, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, parts of northern Bihar and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Long-term seismic analysis in the region shows that the amount of energy accumulated in subduction zones is not dissipated evenly by the small and medium earthquakes that are occurring now. The energy was accumulating, and relief could occur in the form of a strong earthquake of magnitude higher than eight in the future. Therefore, scholars urge people and authorities to strictly adhere to building codes. Remember that earthquakes do not kill people. Buildings do!

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
