Millions are taking part in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill, to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic

In a year of uncertainty and challenges, ShakeOut provides the opportunity to increase individual and community resilience. There’s still time to join ShakeOut this year: Register to participate any day that suits you at ShakeOut.org. Most of them take action on International Check Out Day every third Thursday in October, which falls on October 15 this year. At least 11.1 million people around the world are expected to take action on the day, including 10 million people from the United States and its territories. Also, Earthquake Warning California is coordinating a statewide test to coincide, for the first time, with ShakeOut on October 15th. People who have downloaded the MyShake app on their phones will receive a TEST warning at 10:15 a.m. directing to Drop and Cover and wait! Find out more information on the earthquake website.

ShakeOut organizers recommend people follow the Seven Earthquake Safety Steps, which begin with Step 1: Securing your space. Most earthquake injuries are completely preventable and are caused by furniture and other objects that move or break when vibration occurs, resulting in trips, bruises, cuts and more. Get started now: move heavy items down to the lower shelves, move tall furniture away from entrances and exits, and secure cabinets with latches.

“We’ve come a long way since ShakeOut started in 2008,” said Mark Bennethen, Global ShakeOut coordinator and communications director for the Southern California Earthquake Center at the University of Southern California. “Not only are more people practicing earthquake safety, they are also securing furniture and things around them, discussing safety plans, and even modifying their homes. For 2020, they’re also adapting their drilling plans due to COVID-19.”
